The good humor of this song is disguised by the somber mood.  When first approached by the muse, the ego wants to protect itself against the pain reality imposes.  The question of reality itself soon infiltrates the mind until Mind introduces itself and the path is revealed.

When Somebody Loves You

The rumors started soon enough, we were reaching the abyss.
The finger pointing my way was connected to a kiss.
She faded in the fog like the memory of a shadow.
I looked down, saw my feet in the water.

When somebody loves you
    and you don’t know why,
    you can’t stop crying.

I was melting from the bottom up like sugar on the tongue.
Her eyes were broken mirrors, the fog like bleeding sand.
It whispered (spider to the fly), “Your days are numbered.
She’ll kill if you lie, toss your heart in the gutter.”

She said, “Y’know you’re losing me when you call it inspiration.
I don’t know what to think about the way you play,”
then she motioned me to come closer,
ignored what I was protecting, says,
“Can you hear my heart?
Do you know why it’s beating?”

When somebody loves you
    and you don’t know why
    you can’t stop lying.
You feel like dying, dying.

It was all as good as over from that night of many splendors.
It was never meant to be more than just a picture in a frame.
A veil pulled aside to view another veil, another,
‘til the only veil that’s left
    is silence,
    a heartbeat,
        a shudder,
            a hunch.
