Obama White House Blues
Certainly the rise of Barack Obama is one of the most important periods in the history of the United States, signaling a more racially diverse America than has ever been. This song is set just before the inauguration in 2009. It is sung from the point of view of the ghost of the presidency itself, largely the spirit of 43 white men, who inhabit and reshape the mind of every president according to the needs of the time, and the intelligence and political skills of the man himself. The ghost has to tell the new president the truth about the government, and his role in it.
Obama White House Blues
Black man in the White House.
America has changed.
Obama's in the White House.
America's been changed.
In so much trouble now
it'll never be the same.
Now he won't become the president
Until eye to eye we see.
He can call himself the name,
Only I can set him free,
When I put the hand right on him,
Set his mind straight up with me.
Sometimes the man will fight me,
But he'll always come around.
He thinks he's gonna change me,
But he always comes around.
They all start out by standing up,
And I make 'em all sit down.
I'm the ghost of many places.
Shape shifter through and through.
I've had four and forty faces.
Some were false, some were true.
But every one has made me what I am.
It's what's passing on to you.
Politicians they like winning.
Sometimes they don't know what they lose.
You can get elected President
But can you fill the shoes?
Of the ones that came before you,
Everyone now sings the blues.
