Kick the Can Down the Road
Based on the AAFM folk song Lazy Farmer Boy, about a girl who won't accept the proposal of a young man because she thinks he is lazy and unlucky, this version takes the point of view of the boy. Obvious political allegory.
Kick the Can Down the Road
Sometimes I think I'm crazy,
I don't water my garden everyday.
I raise weeds, I pull up daisies.
I hate beer but I drink it anyway.
What'd I do?
Kicked the can down the road.
Only good thing I did
was kick the can down the road.
I kill bees to get their honey,
I let the ear worm eat my corn.
There ain't nothing I won't do for money,
but I never learned what money is for.
Last year I had rotten tomatoes,
early frost took all my best.
This year, a big tornado.
I'm outa work, I never rest.
So what'd I do?
I kicked the can down the road.
Walk a little while in my shoes, you be
kickin' the can down the road.
When you find out about
what you can
and what you can't do,
y' kick the can down the road.
Sometimes I think I'm crazy,
I catch fish, I just throw 'em away.
I say "not now," you call me lazy.
I won't work unless I'm paid.
My irrigation system's broken.
My dog won't get up no more.
My woman thinks I'm losing
Everything I been working for.
What'd I do?
I kicked the can down the road.
Jerking me around,
kickin' the can down the road.
You told me twice, but
I never did what I knew I should.
All I did was
kick the can down the road.
Sometimes I think I'm crazy.
Went to war, it went the wrong way.
Guess I made me a devil's bargain.
I maybe buy my soul back someday. You
may be thinkin' I'm dumb as dust,
I thought Talladega Nights was about George W.
Whatcha mean when you say I'm busted? I been
trying my whole life to act like one 'a ya.
Y' yelling at me
for kickin' the can down the road.
I just kick it to the next guy
to kick the can down the road.
Sooner or later you learn,
even if you did the best you could,
sometimes the best you'll do
is kick the can down the road.
