Both 1965 and 2005 were years of trouble.  While the happy memories of Kesey, Cassady, the Merry Pranksters, and the idyllic beginnings of the Haight Ashbury period contrasted with the build up of the Vietnam War and the Watts Riots in Los Angeles, 2005 distinguished itself with the nightmare of Hurrican Katrina in New Orleans, and the horror of  Bush's Iraq War, which by 2005 had the look of a complete fiasco.  The spirit of the Satanic paranoia Hawthorne wrote about in his story, Young Goodman Brown, seemed to fill the air.  But the musical sound that embodied the spirit of 1965 was Garage Rock, the sound of the Stones, the Kinks, Folk Rock, Electric Dylan, and Kesey's Acid Tests.  The times were indeed changing.
